Make good things happen

We all love the feeling of having something good happen to us – the warm glow of pride, the satisfying sense of achievement, the unstoppable smile of happiness. But how can we experience more of that in our lives? Can we make good things happen?

THE HAPPINESS PROJECT

The days are long, but the years are short. Time is passing, and I’m not focusing enough on the things that really matter.
— GRETCHEN RUBIN, AUTHOR OF OUR BOOK OF THE MONTH, HAD AN EPIPHANY ON A BUS ONE RAINY AFTERNOON AND DECIDED TO DEDICATE A YEAR TO MAKING HERSELF HAPPY.

The Happiness Project chronicles her adventures during the 12 months she spent test-driving wisdom, scientific research, and lessons from popular culture about how to be happier. It’s since become a movement, with groups of people meeting to discuss their own happiness projects.

To be happier, we need to do more of what brings us joy, love and connection. If our lives reflect our values, things will feel ‘right’, and small changes really can make a big difference.

EMPOWERING GROWTH

Growth can enhance our feelings of happiness, through learning and advancing, making things better, assuming responsibilities, and contributing to the growth of others. Personal empowerment allows you to take control of your life and make positive decisions based on what you want.

Your time is precious, and reframing your working and personal life can have lasting benefits. It’s about taking ownership of your time and energy, and using it wisely, working out what really matters and setting a clear direction for yourself. It’s ok to say ‘no’ and focus on what brings you joy, and helps you achieve your goals for personal growth.

GIVING BACK

Doing good makes you feel good – it’s as simple as that. Joy is contagious, so if you’re feeling happy and motivated, you’ll be compelled to share those emotions with others however you can. Whether you give back through donations to charity, dedicate your time to volunteer, or commit to teaching others, it will increase your feelings of self-worth and well-being. Proud that you’re doing the right thing and making something good happen for someone else.

HERE ARE 5 TIPS TO MAKE GOOD THINGS HAPPEN FOR YOU:

  • Think positively – a positive mindset can motivate you and help you find more joy.

  • Treat others kindly – giving others a boost can make you feel good, as well as open potential doors in the future. You never know the impact a positive connection may have.

  • Do what makes you happy – following someone else’s path will never fully fulfil you. Figure out what you’re passionate about, what you love, and then pour your heart into doing it.

  • Be dedicated – once you’ve identified the goals you want to achieve, put the effort into making them a reality. The more you bring to something, the more you get from it.

  • Keep going – if you reach your first target, set another, and then another. Define what success means to you and how you accomplish it. Your goals may change over time as you grow and evolve, and better learn what you truly enjoy.

We’re setting our own happiness project to do something we love this month, and each month for the rest of the year. So, now is the time to ask: What makes you happy?

The Happiness Project book came into my life at just the right time, and it instantly resonated with me. At the time of writing it, Gretchen had a 7-year-old and a 1-year-old (I have a 6 and 1-year-old) and whilst not unhappy, she felt she could be happier. I love monthly challenges, and I love the anecdotes and her open, honest approach. I’ve got so many tips and am keen to start my own happiness project.
